Don’t Believe These 9 Cybersecurity Tales

Here’s An Overview of What Not To Believe When It Comes To Online Security.

In the months to come, I’ll be tackling each of these points on a more granular level.

  1. We’re small — hackers won’t bother with us.

Many hackers target local businesses because their firewalls are generally not as extensive or kept up to date. Similar to thieves who break into gas stations or small shops, they figure it’s an easy job.

  1. Security systems and software cost too much.

It will cost much more if you have a data breach. Similar to insurance, it may not be something you need often, but when you need it, you really need it.

  1. People don’t follow policies. Why even have them?

If your employees aren’t following protocol, you have a bigger issue on your hands than cybersecurity. Would you accept such behavior if employees turned in grossly inaccurate time sheets? Or if they continually showed up late for meetings?

  1. Our site uses SSL — we’re fine.

SSL is a good baseline measure, but it’s not enough.

  1. Strong passwords are hard to remember.

They don’t have to be. There are many methods that people can employ, such as turning a sentence into a password to make it fun and engaging. I tend to opt for the sarcastic.

  1. Don’t forget to take out the trash, you jerk = D’tfgTT8koTT,UJ.
  2. Do you want some coffee with your creamer, or…? = DYwscw/yc,or…?

Or they can be flat-out random.

  1. The three cashews are plotting against me! = t3CrPttgAGm!
  2. From now on, I’ll only eat markers at Dave’s. = 4mNwo, 1’lonEM@Dv’s.

These types of passwords also tend to make me laugh whenever I type them in.

  1. Why can’t we have our personal devices on our business Wi-Fi?

Personal devices have a much higher likelihood of containing latent viruses that act once a company’s data is available. They can also contain active viruses.

  1. The server is running just fine; it doesn’t need to be patched.

Have you ever heard the phrase: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? Same concept.

  1. My employees are smart enough to not fall for that scam.

Scammers are getting better at hiding fraudulent practices in seemingly legitimate emails and downloads.

  1. Tis the season for a breach.

Unfortunately, it’s always the season when it comes to data breaches. As long as you have online data, especially vulnerable non-public personal information, you’d better watch out!
